hunting scenes, first hunting scene, at night, model 1/33, 2011

Set design and costume design based on Martin Sperr's Hunting scenes from Bavaria (1965)

In Martin Sperr's Hunting scenes from Bavaria (1965), a small village recovers its rough but reassuring everyday life after a devastating war. In this confined and restrained environment, I imagined inhabitants as a strange and foreign community dressed as human scale scarecrows. Their bodies are distorted and disproportionate, a faceless, inert and brutish new species, moving in a slow and abstract way. These expressive beings work, sleep, live on a huge mountain of black sand. I imagined a set created with an unstable material because it brings to mind numerous mental pictures: an enormous sand castle, a children's playground, an abandoned building site, a gigantic tomb, a field of ruins... The frightening villagers live their lives in the eternal sand, between monstrosity and sensuality, dream and nightmare.
