We touch the lives of our “Orchids” with personal care, educational support, and a broad-minded view of the world with designs to foster leaders for tomorrow.

“Bvlgari invites famous contemporary artists to tailor Serpenti Forever handbags”

Text by Tiffany Tan
5 October 2023

“British-French artist Sophie Kitching currently lives in the United States. She applied her expertise to these two Serpenti Forever bags. Just like his painting "Invisible Green", the first handbag uses white calfskin as the canvas, using different shades of green, petals and leaves to create this work of art. She uses vivid paintings and snake-head buckles inlaid with colorful enamel in the same color to inject innovative style into the classic and timeless handbags.

The second handbag design also shows the infinite charm of nature. She draws inspiration from the "Nocturne" painting. The rich and colorful pattern forms a strong contrast with the black calfskin background, reflecting the mysterious charm of the snake.”

Sophie Kitching is a US-based, French-British cross-disciplinary artist whose work portrays an unbridled exploration of the natural environment. Anchored by her experience within, and fascination for scenography, vibrant installations, works on paper, paintings and print works seek to enact the essence of a place, harbouring a perpetual sense of the botanical which is contained within the imagined framework of a window or stage.

Conceived to reinstate a fleeting moment, as if freezing the after-effect of the camera’s flash as it seers an image upon the retina, Sophie’s works invite contemplation while provoking closer inspection, to look, see and discover the individual plants, flowers and microcosms within a meticulously cultivated garden. Many of Sophie Kitching’s pieces are abstractions of the landscapes she has travelled through. Unfurling from the purest form of a small brushstroke — which, for her, emerges naturally in the delicately curved shape of a leaf — each work progresses through a material journey within the specificity of the ecology depicted.

Sight Specific presents a curation of works from Sophie Kitching’s Nocturne and Invisible Green series’ alongside a selection of emerald green panels and watercolours on paper which mediate between the two. Extending the dialogue further are inquiries on polycarbonate and fabric which lend a new perspective on landscape altogether through architectural qualities which hold the verdant elements suspended within, alongside the ephemeral animation of the painted veil as it plays with the wake of someone passing.

The experience of various mediums takes a further departure through installation. Resting within a bath of unfiltered Thames water, the word “afloat” is displayed in neon, held in equilibrium by electrical cables within the biosphere, which continues to slowly develop its own lifecycle in the aquarium despite being cut off from the exterior world. Combining two rival elements, water and high voltage neon light, the installation establishes an alluring interplay between inside and outside and emphasises the thread that simultaneously repels and binds the natural and man-made worlds.

The array of instruments Sophie Kitching employs draw focus to her works’ points of visual difference, highlighting the micro, the barely perceptible within the flourish of each piece as a whole. A fragmented landscape is drawn back together in a process of discovery akin to exploring a new geography. Subtle differences in pattern language, colour palette and composition become the focus, bringing perspective to the work and provoking a sensorial engagement entirely specific to each viewer.

BULGARI | SERPENTI IN ART

In celebration of the deep bond between the mythical snake and the world of art, BVLGARI launches a capsule collection of Serpenti Forever handbags born from the collaboration with three contemporary artists who lent their creative vision to the icon of endless metamorphosis.

OPPOSING FORCES

Focusing on the duality of the snake and its infinite power of transformation, the artist Sophie Kitching plays with opposing forces - such as day and night, inside and outside - in her versions of the Serpenti Forever top handle bag. Nature-inspired motives, evoking the lively strokes of her paintings, animate the black and white Calf Leather body and culminate in the iconic snakehead closure with multicoloured enamel scales.

Designed in New York, handmade in Florence and unveiled in Paris during Fashion Week – Haute Couture, this bespoke work of art celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the Serpenti Icon. The duality of the snake and its infinite power of transformation is exalted by the nature-inspired motifs, brought to life in an exuberance of color.

A keen observer of her environment, French-British artist Sophie Kitching (b. 1990, Isle of Wight, UK) creates installations, paintings, and sculptures that offer condensed versions of natural phenomena. Sophie Kitching reacts to specific places, found materials, colors and forms, translating their affective properties into new states, either on canvas or in three-dimensional space. Landscape, particularly the problematics of its representation, frequently figures into these explorations. Like under-paintings culled from the world around us, Sophie Kitching’s compositions draw the viewer into a negotiation with space and depth, the seen and unseen, alternating between gestural brushstrokes on the exterior, and the raw material structure beneath.

Her studio features large paintings on canvas, framed works and sculptures, as well as works in progress

PORTRAIT D’ARTISTE: SOPHIE KITCHING
Revue Point Contemporain #28
Mars-Avril-Mai 2023

NEW YORK — SOPHIE KITCHING: “NOCTURNE” AT 3A GALLERY THROUGH FEBRUARY 26TH, 2023
Article by Alena Marchak
February 25th, 2023

For her latest exhibition on view at 3A Gallery, Sophie Kitching presents new paintings from her Nocturne series, a shadowy and dreamy companion to her Invisible Green series, started in 2019. Both the Nocturnes and the Invisible Green paintings incorporate images of bright flowers and leaves as their main subject matter, but the former is painted onto a background made of black ink mixed with Payne’s gray whereas the latter is on a white canvas. The contrast of both and indeed the title itself—Nocturne—alludes to the opposites representing night and day versions of one another, but moreover they tell a subtle tale of light versus shadow and express entirely different temperaments and moods.
