Sophie Kitching transforms cultural images and objects into installations, videos, paintings and performances. Based on the critical observation of her environment, her art practice explores concepts related to mobility, denaturation, utopia, and memory. Her works are conceived in terms of systems in relation to the places she visits and inhabits.

Sophie Kitching has exhibited internationally with solo and group shows in Paris, France at Palais de Tokyo, Villa Emerige, 22 Visconti, Villa Belleville, Bubenberg, Under Construction Gallery, Arnaud Deschin Galerie, Galerie Melanie Rio, Le Huit, the National Library of France ; in New York at Pioneer Works, the project spaces 67 and CuatroH, and during NYCxDesign week; in Brussels, Belgium at the artist-run space Grande Surface; in Germany in both Berlin and Frankfurt; in London at Noho Studios during Frieze London; in Toronto, Canada as part of the festival NXNE Art.

Her exhibition ‘Nuits Américaines’ at Maison de Chateaubriand, Châtenay-Malabry, France (2017-2018) consisted of a five-month solo presentation of her work in a national, historical institution. Her first monographic catalogue was published by Lienart in 2017 and distributed in Paris major art museums (Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Jeu de Paume). She has also contributed to large-scale collective projects at Centquatre Art Center and Nuit Blanche Paris. She has designed sets for the Ballet du Capitole production ‘Don Quichotte’ which premiered at Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse in 2017.

A graduate from the Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (2014), Sophie Kitching was awarded a grant for an exchange program in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts, New York in 2012. She was awarded an artist / author residency at the Maison de Chateaubriand in 2017 and was nominated for the emerging artist grant ‘Bourse Révélation Emerige’ in 2016.She gained experience working wIth visual artists Jeppe Hein in Berlin (2013) and Gabriel Orozco in New York, Mexico and Bali (2014-2018).
