Artifice V, 2025, oil on canvas, 40 x 30 in. (101 x 76 cm)

Damon Liss is pleased to present ‘Artifice’, an exhibition by Sophie Kitching’s in his Tribeca showroom, at the invitation of Erica Samuels.

Sophie Kitching’s ‘Artifice’ paintings use the repetition of botanical motifs as a painterly process to create lush landscapes, drawing inspiration from the decorative language of “mille-fleurs” tapestries. Abstracted, leaf-like forms, rendered through quick brushstrokes, drips, and patterns, evoke movement and musicality, while other passages recede into shadow. Kitching’s distinctive painterly marks create tonal progressions in which flora emerges from dense backgrounds, overpainted in Emerald green, muted blue, Venetian or Pompeian red. The transition of one hue into another becomes an analogy for the alchemy of painting and the subjective perception of color.

As a French-British artist based in New York, she draws on a city defined by its reinvented nature, where artifice and aestheticism have a profound impact on her art practice. The large painting ‘Decompose V’ (2025) emerges from a faded Venetian red ground, where art historical references converge in an airy composition. The evocative pattern seems to extend beyond the picture plane, suggesting the possibility of a mural. In contrast, the intimate works on paper ‘Balmy’ (2022) offer fluid fields in pastel colors while the overpainted photographs ‘Night Visions’ (2026) explore a darker register.

Sophie Kitching’s original lithographs ‘Composition I and II’ (2026) printed and published by Edition Copenhagen in a limited edition are also on view in the Tribeca showroom. During a recent residency at Edition Copenhagen’s lithographic workshop founded in 1959, Kitching created her first prints, inspired by nature and the very process of painting on successive lithographic stones. Each print comes in an edition of 75, numbered and signed by the artist.
